November 1, 2018 marked the beginning of a new chapter in my life: a journey towards living medication-free.

For as long as I can remember, I relied on medication to manage my atopic tendencies. From thick ointments and steroid creams for my eczema to antihistamine pills for my allergies, and inhalers for my asthma, my daily routine was intertwined with pharmaceuticals. It seemed like the natural course of action given my predisposition.

However, after three decades of this reliance, my body reached a breaking point, unable to function optimally with or without medication. It was a daunting realization. Thus began my quest for alternatives, embarking on an intensive healing journey that has enriched my life beyond measure.

Through this process, I discovered the importance of listening to my body and responding to its signals without immediately resorting to medication. I also learned to nurture my body not only externally but also internally, recognizing the interconnectedness of physical and mental well-being.

Join me as I share my experiences and insights gained from this transformative journey towards holistic health and well-being.

Yes, I proudly identify as Indo and am passionate about uniting Southern California's Indo community while raising awareness of our unique ethnicity and history through SoCal Indo.

What began as a lighthearted gesture with SoCal Indo Apparel, featuring our distinctive black and white logo, quickly evolved into a significant movement. Initially seen as Hispanic in SoCal, I aimed to foster dialogue and connections among Indos, a goal that has resonated far beyond our local borders.

SoCal Indo has grown into a thriving community, facilitating cultural celebrations and heritage preservation through local events, social media, and charitable initiatives. For instance, our Facebook Page recently reunited my 91-year-old father with his childhood friend from Buitenzorg, last seen in 1945, at TTF Den Haag in 2019.

This platform also supports elderly Indos and Indonesian orphans in Surabaya and Semarang through fundraising and awareness campaigns.

Furthermore, SoCal Indo serves as an educational resource on Indo-Dutch history and culture, fostering unity and understanding among our followers worldwide. Together, we cherish our roots in the former Dutch East Indies and are committed to preserving our heritage for future generations.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to supporters across America, Canada, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, France, Sweden, Taiwan, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, and Indonesia. Your unwavering Indo Love and Support have made SoCal Indo a true success story.

I started to make t-shirts and sweatshirts for my sons because I couldn't find streetwear to my liking for them. because of my sons I wanted to have a name for the brand that was really close to them, to us. so I looked at the initials of my wife sons and me and it spells MMAD.

With a career spanning over 20 years in the Dutch music industry, Wesley Nuis has established himself as a renowned guitarist. Wesley began his journey as a session musician, working with acts such as Gers Pardoel, Diggy Dex, Bakermat, and 2Unlimited. In addition to these collaborations, he pursued his own project, Liptease, which achieved significant recognition by securing the second place in Holland's Got Talent2014.

Since 2018, Wesley has been working closely with Davina Michelle, performing alongside her during all shows like festival tours, club tours and radio/tv shows and as the support act for major tours, including the Maroon 5 European tour and Pink's European tour. During Pink’s tour, Wesley proudly showcased his Indonesian heritage by incorporating batik into his stage attire.

Wesley is celebrated not only for his musical skills but also for his dynamic stage presence.

Wesley is now dedicated to passing on his extensive knowledge and experience to aspiring professionals and those looking to elevate their skills. To this end, he founded the Wes Academy, which offers a wide range of courses.

These courses are not limited to music; they reflect Wesley's diverse interests, encompassing guitar playing, stage performance, education, fashion, table football, karate, fitness, ice skating and inline skating. Among these offerings is "Skate Lessons from Wes," a specialized class focusing on braking techniques in skating.

The name itself literally translates to 'danger(ous).' Faris, the creative mind behind Bahaya, is based in Rotterdam, raised in Tilburg as a third-generation Moluccan with a Moluccan mother and Dutch father. In addition to his work as a freelance illustrator under the name Refreshh, he is the visionary behind BAHAYA.

In 2009, during his final year at the Communication & Multimedia Design program in Breda, Faris' interest in his Moluccan roots awakened. This passion led to the launch of 'Bahaya clothing,' featuring a sold-out series of T-shirts characterized by abstract, impressive Maluku-style typography.

After numerous projects, Bahaya entered a new era with a completely revamped style. A fresh logo and a new concept came to life after in-depth research, sketching, and digitalization. For two years, Faris delved into archives, read books, engaged in conversations, and consulted experts.

The culmination of this process is the "Van kust tot kade" poster series, paying tribute to the arrival and sacrifices of Moluccan families in the Netherlands in 1951.

Welcome to Face This. We’re a charity, dressed as a streetwear brand, dropping a new collab every single month. We unleash the raw creativity of Indonesian school kids, through meaningful collaborations with the world’s most renowned artists.

And as the proceeds contribute to their schools, the kids literally design their own future.

"Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” Picasso was immensely inspired by the way children draw. He even said: “It took me four years to paint like Rafael, but a lifetime to paint like a child.” And it’s not just Picasso who felt this way about art.

Today’s artists are also inspired by how kids create. Therefore we asked ourselves: “If kids are so creative, shouldn’t the ones living in poverty be able to use their creativity as a force for good? And what if they could inspire artists around the world in the mean time?”

Since2008, we´ve been inspiring internationally renowned (street)artists by enabling them to collaborate with Indonesian school kids on tees, totes and sweaters. How? Indonesian school kids craft compelling drawings which artists use to design terrific T-shirt artworks with.

In the 15 years since we began, our charity has raised over 100,000 Euros and funded nine different educational projects across Indonesia. From building new classrooms to renovating existing ones, and from earthquake relief aid to food packages to support communities during the pandemic, the proceeds of Face This T-shirts have helped provide different kinds of support.

Inspired by this idea, I decided to bring it to life during the first lockdown. I provide catering services for individuals and businesses, catering to various special occasions. When preparing Moluccan dishes for your catering needs, I approach it as if I were cooking for my entire family, ensuring genuine authentic flavors, fresh ingredients, and an unparalleled taste experience.

I've always had a passion for being creative – dancing, singing, drawing, sculpting, painting, baking, and cooking. Creating fondant cakes turned out to be the perfect combination for me. What started as a hobby has grown into a true passion, and I consider each cake a new and exciting challenge!

To me, the exterior of the cake is just as important as the interior. I value a good taste balance and a delightful mouthfeel. The ingredients and products I use are carefully selected to make each cake a complete masterpiece, both inside and out.

A cake from Taartjes Toko is not overly sweet and doesn't contain heavy, buttery creams. Instead, it's soft, airy, and always concealed with ganache under a thin layer of fondant. The design always includes an eye for detail.

My name is Alaisa Jennie-Vlegaard and I live in Dordrecht with my husband Rudmar and our daughter Jaeda. The inspiration for this book began when I became a mother.

During my pregnancy and the early months of motherhood I pondered how I could pass on the rich Indonesian culture to my daughter.

The name "Oma Indo," used in the book comes from my mother, Josephine Nijhof-van Tienen, whom my daughter affectionately calls by this name. This led to naming our self-publishing venture "Uitgeverij Oma Indo."

My mother imparted various Indonesian customs to my sister and me, but we never really learned the language. I was determined to change this for my daughter.

Growing up, my sister and I had a Dutch ABC book that our mother often read to us, ending with a dramatic flair on the letter Z. This cherished memory inspired me to create a similar book for Jaeda.

When my daughter was a few months old I asked my mother if an Indonesian ABC book existed. We discovered an outdated version online which prompted my mother and me to create a new, modern version.

In June 2021 we learned that my mother was terminally ill. This news motivated me to turn our written ABC into a book, initially as a keepsake for Jaeda.

As we progressed I realized that this book could be enjoyable and educational for all generations, regardless of their Indonesian heritage.

"Het Indonesisch ABC" symbolizes the fusion of three generations into one story and one book. It represents the transmission of Indonesian culture and the uniting of generations, creating a timeless legacy.

Meanwhile we've expanded our offerings with additional merchandise, including T-shirts, tote bags and stickers to share and celebrate Indonesian culture with younger generations in a fun and engaging way.

I always knew I had a passionate soul and a hunger to create. I learned about goldsmithing while I was graduating high school. There was nothing I wanted to pursue more and felt this in every fiber of my being! It was and is my purpose in life!

Almost 15 years later, I completed a full-time education as a Master Goldsmith in Schoonhoven and got my Bachelor in Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Utrecht. I am grateful to live the dream I worked so hard for and can call myself an independent jewelry designer.I am heavily influenced by the duality of my heritage and the rich history that comes with it.

He is the owner of The Cocktail Agency & The Gourmet Agency which focuses on catering experiences, event planning, yacht supply, consultancy, bartenders hire, brand activation, training, workshops and new business with his partners in crime: Mates Rum, Moa Vodka, LALA Tequila, Bakers Best Genever, Sir Edmond Gin, 1689 Gin, Rheben Rhubarb liqueur, Bandoeng '22 liqueur, Ginamis 0% & Rumamis 0%.

Dave's work as been noticed by brands and he had the pleasure working together with brands such as: Chanel, Ray Ban, Tiffany & Co, Heineken, Netflix, Gucci & FIFPRO (during the Champions League men's finals in Paris 2022 & Istanbul 2023 and the womens finals in Torino 2022 & Eindhoven 2023.

Soon Dave starts his own A line and B line Ready To Drink cocktails with his signature award winning cocktails.

In 2008 Mulder became European beer tapping champion during an international student bar competition where he competed in 5 different bar competitions in Estonia (AEHT competition). Soon after that, he won several prizes in cocktail mixing such as, 2^nd National Championship Cocktails & Best Technique Award in 2009, 2^ndInternational Calvados Nouvelle Vogue trophies 2010, and 1^st National Championship Cocktails & Best Technique Award in 2010.

Dave participated in the John Whyte Course in Singapore in 2009 and came back in Singapore during the World Championships Cocktails in 2010 to represent Holland and placed 14th. As the recipient of numerous awards in bartending, he has grown into a dynamic team leader, mentor and trainer in hospitality services.

Dave is known not only as a bartender, but also as a board member of De Nederlandse Bartenders Club as competition commissioner & coach. Here he volunteers to coach & train Dutch Champions each year into World Championships Cocktails.

Over the last 14 years to World Championships Cocktails in Japan with competitor Airto Cramer, Denmark with Sharai Rodriquez, awarded Silver in Bartenders Choice category, Beijing with Robert Brommet, Bulgaria with Robert Brommet with a gold medal in the sparkling category, South Africa with Leroy Soumokil and latest championships in 2023 Italy with Nick Vrieling resulting in Gold Medal in category pre dinner.

Career

Dave has been the leading bar manager at MOMO Restaurant, Bar & Lounge for the past 6 years and was involved the start-up of the venues from the same group; Izakaya Amsterdam, The Duchess, Mr. Porter, The Butcher Albert Cuyp from The Entourage Group.

Dave also worked as F&B manager at Hotel Twenty Seven and Dave was in the start-up team of several other key places in Amsterdam such as Tunes Bar (now Taiko Bar) at Conservatorium Hotel.

Meet Ade Itameda, a talented tattoo artist from Bali whose journey into tattooing began out of curiosity and quickly turned into a passionate career. Ade fell in love with the drawing style, equipment, rituals and the entire process of tattooing, along with the deep connections formed with clients.

Initially Ade envisioned unique tattoo designs that no one else could deliver perfectly, so he began creating his own designs - a practice he continues to this day. Tattooing has been a transformative force in his life helping him gain self-confidence and avoid trouble.

Ade's fascination with tattooing started early; he did his first tattoo at the age of 12 or 13 using equipment he secretly borrowed from a local fried banana vendor. Although there were no proper mentors or training facilities available to him at the time, his passion never waned.

In 2000 Ade got his first tattoo with a professional machine at his first visit to a tattoo shop. There he learned the basics from soldering needles to drawing simple objects like apples. His dedication to the craft grew more serious when he moved to Europe around 2009-2010.

Ade draws inspiration from various sources including temples, traditional activities, historical places and any environment where he feels relaxed and comfortable. This eclectic mix of influences informs his unique tattoo style.

Over the years Ade has tattooed numerous people, but one of his most memorable experiences was traveling across countries to tattoo former footballer Nigel de Jong, working in various settings from shops to mansions.

I am the youngest daughter of Maud Mouthaan, an Indonesian woman born in Semarang, Central Java, and my Chinese father Tan Tjhoen Hok, born in Surabaya, East Java. I have two older sisters.

Our mother learned to cook before the family moved to the Netherlands in 1964. My father naturally accompanied her to the Netherlands but asked her to learn cooking first. Bread and potatoes, he didn't fancy that. And the Indonesian cook who cooked so deliciously and took care of the family couldn't come along, of course.

So our mother learned to cook very well. She was really very precise. How the dish looked, how it should smell, and of course, the taste. We always ate rice, with freshly prepared dishes with homemade spices without packets and jars.

When she became partially paralyzed in 1979, we had to take over the cooking. This meant going to the living room several times with the mortar, cutting board, or spoon to ask our mother if the spices were good in color, taste, and if they were finely ground enough.

Our mother then began typing out her recipes for her daughters. For us, she said, but of course also a bit out of self-interest. She wanted to be able to continue eating as well as when she could still cook herself.

As I grew older, I wanted to evoke the flavors of my childhood home with my parents more and more. So in recent years, I have been cooking more and more Indonesian and Chinese dishes with my mother's recipes.

When I was asked to write the Bible of Indonesian Cuisine, all the puzzle pieces fell into place and I could share my love for this cuisine, but also for my mother's dishes.

Introducing myself as Joyce de Vries, a second-generation Indo with a unique twist that often makes me feel more like a third generation. My father hails from New Guinea, while my mother, though born in the Netherlands, also comes from an Indo background.

In 2020, upon welcoming our son into the world, I found myself pondering how to instill a sense of Indianness in him. Surprisingly, I realized my own knowledge on the subject was rather limited. Despite my outward appearance reflecting my Indo heritage, I questioned whether appearance alone was sufficient. What if my son doesn't look as Indo as I do? Can he still connect with his Indo identity? And what tools does he need for that connection?

Thus, began my quest for answers. It didn't take long to discover I wasn't alone in grappling with these questions. That realization ignited a desire within me to make it easier for our children to embrace their cultural heritage, both its joys and challenges. I started brainstorming the best way to impart this to him, eventually landing on the idea of an interactive website. And thus, the development of such a platform is currently underway.

The name "Toko Lo" originated in my family. Where my full name is Lola, it has been shortened to Lo since I can remember. The "toko" was later added. At a young age, I was already in love with food. I wanted to make it my profession. Determined, I early on said that I would become a pastry chef. Right after high school, my adventure as a pastry chef began.

I started a work-study program, first in a pastry shop and later switching to a patisserie. Eventually, I graduated as an all-around pastry chef.

My grandmother Annie was a very good cook. After she was forced to come to the Netherlands, she learned to cook from her mother-in-law who lived in the house. Soon, my grandmother mastered this skill and how! Years later, the family came every weekend from all over the country to enjoy my grandmother's cooking and baking skills. Denstraat 30 in Amersfoort was the place where everyone gathered.

Also, friends of grandpa & grandma and of my father and uncles. Everyone was welcome, and there was always something delicious for them. And how lucky I was to experience this on my mother's side of the family too, through Grandma Jos. Who was also a very good cook, just like mom.

After my grandmother passed away and the aunts got older, I decided to delve more into Indonesian recipes. It became known to family and friends that I had started baking/cooking. Requests started pouring in; "your grandma always made those pastries, do you have that recipe?" or "those layered cakes with rum that your grandma made, can I order those?".

When delivering my experiments or cookies from school, I was joyfully welcomed with "there's Toko Lo". I fully embraced this name, and now we are inseparably connected.

After the orders and requests expanded beyond family and acquaintances, it was time to register in 2015 with the Chamber of Commerce as Toko Lo, the Indonesian Bakery & Catering.

I've devoted myself to conducting extensive tests on various curly hair types, gaining insights into the unique needs of each curl. The learning process is ongoing, and I'm continuously refining my understanding.

Esmay Usmany is a professional musician, playwright and writer. She sings, acts, writes, and creates. After graduating from the Utrecht Conservatory, she performed in various musical theater productions, touring throughout the Netherlands and Belgium.

She reached the finals of the Utrecht Cabaret Festival, won the audience award at the Fringe Festival and received the press award for best performance from the Rijswijk Language Festival.

Currently, she can be seen in theaters with her show "Soedah laat maar...", which was awarded four stars and received a glowing review from Theaterparadijs. LEVEN!magazine describes her songs and lyrics as poetic, narrative and unifying.

Welcome to Banun Designs - where Indonesian Art meets fashion, jewelry and more. I started my own clothing line when I moved to The Netherlands in 2015. Growing up in Jakarta, I have learned a lot about Indonesian culture, and it really inspired me to design my own creations. We all know Batik of course, but are you familiar with "Tenun"? Tenun is basically an Indonesian technique of making fabric by weaving different colors of threads produced by hand.

These fabrics are made in various places such as on the islands of Java, Sumatra, Bali and Sulawesi - each region has its own uniqueness and characteristics. This is something I want to promote more here.

All of the designs, including the jewelry, are handmade in Surabaya and Jakarta. And the prints you see on the handbags are hand drawn by me.

Many ask, what is the meaning of "Banun"? It literally means the wise one, but it is also used as a first name of a person's full name, which is popular in Javanese culture from where my mother and her side of the family is from. From what I understand, it was, or still is used as a prefix. In this case, it means "my lady".

And why did I pick this name? Besides it's unique and beautiful meaning, the main source came from the lady who taught me so much about the beauty of my Indonesian background and made me really fall in love and passionate about art & fashion. I called her "Eyang" (grandmother) but her real first name was Banun.

Jeroen Krul, residing in Utrecht, is a highly skilled and versatile designer with a keen eye for illustration, graphic design, and web design. His broad orientation and entrepreneurial spirit drive him to seek out surprising collaborations.

Professional Experience:

Jeroen balances his work at an information design agency with various freelance projects. Notably, he illustrated the children’s book "Stamppot met Sambal," published by Stichting TongTong. He also organized "Café de Oogst," a cultural event focusing on the visual aspects of shared Indonesian, Moluccan, and Papuan culture. For this event, he even designed special clothing.

Cultural Inspiration:

His Indonesian heritage has been a source of inspiration for many years and is evident in his diverse body of work. Jeroen’s unique perspective infuses his projects with a rich cultural narrative.

Client Collaborations:

Jeroen works on self-initiated projects and commissions from a variety of clients, including Moesson, FENIX, the Rijksmuseum, and the Indisch Herinneringscentrum.

Our founder, Anna, grew up in a Dutch/Moluccan household and was introduced to jamu from a young age. During her stay in Bali, Indonesia, she became inspired to learn more about the benefits of jamu. She had the opportunity to learn from jamu masters and began incorporating it into her daily routine.

Upon returning to the Netherlands, Anna shared her love for jamu with friends and family. Before she knew it, she was making it for friends as well. That's when the idea for Good Jamu was born – a company bringing the ancient tradition of jamu to the modern world.

Jamu is a dying craft. In Indonesia, people no longer have the time to make jamu due to the labor-intensive preparation process, and the mass production of cheap crops for global consumption has made it less profitable than before.

We consider it our duty to keep this ancient tradition alive in the modern world, and we aim to achieve that with Good Jamu.
